Lynne Tan is a ceramic artist who loves creating both functional ware and sculptural pieces. She found that jewelry-making provides the perfect opportunity for creating sculptural objects that are also intimately functional, just on a smaller scale!
She hand-builds miniature sculptures from white or black porcelain clay, and kiln fires them to approximately 2200 degrees F. Ear wires are individually crafted from Argentium sterling silver. The porcelain is lightly sanded after firing so that the surface is smooth to the touch, but she does not apply any glaze so that the organic rawness of the clay's muddy origins can be fully appreciated. She tries to preserve the fluidity of clay in the forms she makes as beauty, for her, lies in the elegance of understated simplicity.
